What are gift cards

Gift cards are prepaid stored-value money card issued by a retailer or bank to be used as an alternative to cash for purchases within a particular store such as Amazon, Google play store, Apple store, iTunes, etc. They are usually issued by retailers and marketers as part of promotion strategies, to entice the recipient of such gift card to always return to the store for purchases.

Gift cards are generally redeemable only for purchases in a particular store and it can not be cashed out and in some cases, may come with an expiry date.

But, good news! Though, gift cards are designed to be redeemed for purchase within a specified store and there's no direct way to convert it to cash in your bank account, you can actually find a buyer who's willing to pay cash in exchange for the gift card value.

Of all the gift cards traded in Nigeria, there's no doubt that Apple iTunes gift card is the most prominent and popular.

iTunes gift cards are used in iPhone App store to make purchases such as buying music, apps purchases and subscriptions. iTunes gift card, fortunately, do not have expiry date and they are redeemable through the App store on iPhones.

To redeem an iTunes gift card a promotional code on the card usually starting with the letter X is entered in the App store on an iPhone. Once redeemed, the account is credited with a balance equivalent to the value of the card which can be used for purchasing apps and music within the App store. Some other gift cards that are of more value and prominent in Nigeria are Amazon, Steam Wallet and Google play gift cards.

Types of gift cards

Gift cards are of two types based on the issuer of the cards.

Closed loop gift cards

Closed loop gift cards
These types of cards are only used within a particular stores, supermarket, restruants, etc. They are issued by retailers allowing customers to load prepaid funds that can be used for future purchases. They don't require any activation fees. They are usually not reloadable, that is, once the balance is spent, they can't be reused again. They may have expiration dates but not all of them have. Examples of this type of gift cards are the Amazon gift card, Google play store gift card, Apple iTunes gift card, Steam gift cards and others.

Open loop gift cards

Open loop gift cards
This type of cards is more flexible and can be spent anywhere the payment card processor is accepted. These cards are usually issued by payment processors like American Express, Visa, Verve, Discover or MasterCard. These cards displays the payment processor logos and can be used to make any type of electronic payment anywhere. Open loop gift cards have the advantage of serving as a standard prepaid card which can be reloaded and reused. They usually come with some activation and maintenance or administrative charges.

Other valuable and acceptable gifts that can be sent in lieu of gift cards

No doubt, gift cards are not that valuable in terms of price and the majority of gift cards recepients do not find any use for it. 100 dollar iTunes gift card in Naira, for instance, as at the time of writing this post is only worth around ₦35,000.
